Thrissur: Bengaluru police said that nearly 80 per cent of consumers of psychotropic drugs in the city are Keralites. The higher officials in Karnataka police revealed the shocking statistics to a team of Kerala police who went to Bengaluru in connection with the investigation of a case. Several Malayalis involved in drug trafficking cases are currently serving jail terms in Bengaluru. Many of the youth are below 20 years of age, said Bengaluru police.

Kerala police said that the 409.67 gram of MDMA seized by the Thrissur city police this year till October was brought from Bengaluru. Apart from this, another 300 gram of MDMA was seized from a Malayali in Bengaluru. All the 35 accused nabbed to date have direct or indirect connections with Bengaluru.

Police also found that Delhi was the source of psychotropic drugs in Bengaluru. A region where migrants from Africa reside as a colony has emerged as an epicentre of drug peddling in Delhi. Though Kerala police reached here for an investigation, the residents refused to cooperate and shut the doors. According to the police, most of them did not possess passports or visas. Without any travel documents, they could not find any jobs. Hence, they resort to illegal activities such as drug peddling.

The anti-narcotic squad of the Thrissur police arrested a Delhi-based Nigerian youth for allegedly smuggling MDMA and other synthetic drugs into Kerala.
