Thiruvananthapuram: A fisherman, identified as Victor (50) from Anchuthengu, died after his boat overturned in Muthalapozhi at around 1:30 am on Thursday.

The boat 'Chintadhira' owned by Jobo, an Anchuthengu native overturned. The accident occurred while the fishermen were returning after fishing, and the boat capsized due to strong currents. Three other fishermen, Francis, Suresh and Yesudas who were onboard survived.

Victor's body was found during a search conducted by the rescue guards and coastal police who were there at the time of the accident. The body was shifted to Government Taluk Hospital Chirayinkeezhu for post-mortem.

A few weeks back, three persons were rescued from an overturned boat but one succumbed later. Reports even indicate that there were four people aboard the boat.

In another incident, a person jumped into the sea and managed to escape. Following this, local authorities urged fishermen to take extra precautions while fishing in the river and backwaters.

Since the beginning of 2024, this region has witnessed 11 fatalities in separate accidents, with two deaths in unrelated incidents.
