Order on quantum of punishment in Aluva child rape and murder case on November 14

Aluva: The order on the quantum of sentence against Bihar native Ashfaq Alam, who was found guilty of all 16 charge in the harrowing Aluva child rape and murder case will likely be pronounced on November 14.

The hearing happened today at Ernakulam POCSO court and the prosecution reiterated its demand of capital punishment. Citing the accused's age, his counsel pleaded before the court not to slap capital punishment.

Incidentally, the quantum of punishment will be pronounced on the day which is celebrated as Children's Day in India. 

The court had declared the accused guilty last Saturday.

The chargesheet in the case pertaining to the incident that happened on July 28 was issued on the 35th day. The trial began two months later, and the proceedings were completed in 26 days. 

The girl was abducted, brutally raped, and killed by a migrant worker from Bihar who lived in the same building as the victim. Her body was found dumped in a sack in a marshy area behind a local market in Aluva. 16 charges were levied against Ashfaq Alam under various provisions of the POCSO Act and the IPC, including aggravated penetrative sexual assault, rape, and murder.
