Hyderabad: One of the most awaited airport projects in South India, Srikakulam is about to see the light of the day with the Airports Authority of India conducting a land assessment study. Experts view this as one of the most significant steps towards the development of the airport as it will completely revamp the air travel in the region. The initiative was proposed by Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu during his recent visit to the region.

The land assessment study was conducted in land parcels across five villages across Mandasa and Vajrapukotturu mandals namely Ganguvada, Betalapuram, Lakshmipuram, and Bidimi in Mandasa, and Anakapalli and Onkuru in Vajrapukotturu. The assessment team comprised a team from AAI led by Deputy General Manager Parvinder along with district officials.

What does evaluation of the suitability of the land for the airport include?

  • natural resources
  • government-owned plots
  • residential zones
  • local population density.
  • water resources
  • proximity to mining areas
  • groundwater availability

According to sources, villages Mandasa and Vajrapukotturu are under further scrutiny for development as they turned out to be the most viable options for the new airport construction site.

Naturally the new airport will significantly improve the air connectivity of the region facilitating overall business and socio-economic development in the area. Currently the project is in its nascent stage to consider any future plans but the authorities are optimistic of commencing the construction work soon.

If we look at Srikakulam as a region, there is no direct aerial connectivity and this airport will be a game changer as it will bring Srikakulam on the global air travel map, connecting the region with various metros in India,
