Advised to speak respectfully, Kerala college lecturer assaulted by student and brother

Palakkad (Kerala): The Mangkara Police has registered a case against a second-year undergraduate student and his elder brother for assaulting a college lecturer on the campus of Government College, Pathiripala. The victim, K Shabeer, a faculty member in the Department of Political Science, sustained injuries in the attack and sought medical treatment at the Ottapalam Taluk Hospital.

The police identified the accused as Muhammed Anas (19), a second-year BBA student at the college, and his brother Ashik Ali (30), both residents of Mannur.

Altercation originated from parking incident

According to police officials, the incident took place on Tuesday around 11.15 am. The trouble began earlier in the morning when a female faculty member's car accidentally made minor contact with Anas’s motorcycle parked on campus.

Following the incident, Anas and his brother entered the staff room and allegedly began verbally abusing the female lecturer. Hearing the commotion, Shabeer intervened and advised the duo to maintain decorum and speak respectfully. Incensed by the intervention, the brothers escalated the argument into a physical confrontation and assaulted Shabeer before fleeing the scene.

Student suspended pending inquiry

Following the assault, the staff council met on Tuesday evening under the chairmanship of Vice Principal Shivaprabha. The council formally condemned the violence and decided to suspend Muhammed Anas from the institution pending a detailed internal investigation.

Mangkara police has initiated proceedings against both brothers based on the formal complaint lodged by the faculty member.
