Kerala ADGP’s secret meetings: Probe in limbo as RSS leaders signal non-cooperation

Thiruvananthapuram: The investigation into the secret meetings between Kerala ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar and leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) faces significant challenges, as RSS leaders indicate they will not cooperate with the authorities. Despite police efforts to issue a notice to A. Jayakumar, who facilitated these meetings and oversees the RSS's scientific and technical wing, no evidence has surfaced thus far.

A senior RSS leader in Kerala stated, "This is their (C.P.M. and government) political problem. There is no need to comment on this," reinforcing the organisation's stance of non-cooperation with the investigation, even if formally approached.

The BJP has also questioned the legitimacy of the inquiry, asserting that meeting two individuals should not be construed as a crime. They argue that if Ajith's interactions were personal, they would not violate any service regulations. Furthermore, they highlight the friendship between Ajith Kumar and Jayakumar.

Details of the Meetings
Ajith Kumar's first meeting with RSS national leader Dattatreya Hosabale took place in Thrissur on May 22, 2023. Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan claims that the meeting aimed to broker a deal for the electoral success of Suresh Gopi in Thrissur, with allegations linking it to disruptions during the Thrissur Pooram festival.

A subsequent meeting on June 2, 2023, involved Ajith Kumar and RSS national leader Ram Madhav in Kovalam, accompanied by Jayakumar. Reports suggest another prominent figure was present during this discussion, and indications exist that Ajith Kumar may have met Ram Madhav again.

Reactions from the Government and BJP
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan refuted allegations of any collusion with the RSS, stating, "I did not meet RSS leaders through an intermediary. No one can help me in a roundabout way. Only someone who has a habit of going off track can be helped in that manner."

The BJP maintains that the presence of police officials responsible for security at events attended by senior RSS leaders is standard practice, arguing that there is nothing inappropriate about such meetings.

Police Challenges in the Investigation
The investigation remains muddled, as police are unsure where to begin. No conspiracy or crime has been established regarding Ajith Kumar's discussions with RSS leaders, suggesting that the inquiry may devolve into a mere departmental action.

Ajith Kumar has confirmed his meetings with RSS leaders, asserting that they were private affairs. Intelligence reports corroborate that discussions took place, but the police face restrictions in questioning those involved unless they agree to cooperate. Consequently, a report summarising the findings to date will be compiled.

Gathering information from RSS leaders poses a significant hurdle for investigators. A valid case is required to issue summons. Without cooperation, individuals cannot be compelled to provide information, and any legal challenge they mount could further complicate matters.

In light of allegations linking the RSS meetings to disruptions during the Pooram festival, the police chief has been tasked with investigating this aspect as well. However, formal orders on this matter have yet to be issued.

The Chief Minister recently directed police chief Dr. Sheikh Darvesh Sahib to submit a report. This investigation was prompted by rising concerns from the CPI within the ruling front, which pressured the government to take action.
