Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SCMS Water Institute (SWI) to conduct a feasibility study on extending the Kochi Water Metro service from Aluva Metro Station to Cochin International Airport (CIAL) through the Periyar River.

The proposed study is aimed at assessing the possibility of creating a seamless water transport connection between the metro network and Kerala's busiest airport. The initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen the state's sustainable urban transport system through an integrated multimodal network.

The MoU was signed by SCMS Group of Educational Institutions Executive Chairman Prof Pramod Thevannoor and KMRL General Manager (Civil) Jo Paul M. The agreement was exchanged in the presence of KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera.

Study to assess technical and operational viability

The feasibility study will examine the technical and operational aspects of introducing a Water Metro service linking Aluva Metro Station and CIAL. It will also evaluate engineering requirements for developing a continuous water transport corridor between the two locations.

According to KMRL, the proposed project is intended to improve connectivity between major transport hubs while supporting an efficient, environmentally sustainable and integrated public transport system. The study is also expected to contribute to Kochi's plans for climate-resilient urban mobility.

Under the agreement, SCMS Water Institute will act as the knowledge partner, providing academic, technical and research support throughout the study. Its role will include scientific assessments such as floodplain analysis, hydraulic and hydrological studies, water resource modelling and other specialised technical evaluations required to determine the project's feasibility.

Institute to support surveys and technical assessments

The institute will also provide technical guidance to survey teams appointed by KMRL. This will cover survey planning, data collection methods, sampling techniques, field procedures and quality assurance measures.

Subject to KMRL's approval and project requirements, SCMS Water Institute will assist with hydrological modelling, water flow analysis, flood resilience studies, sustainability assessments, survey data analysis and the preparation of technical reports and related documentation, Prof Pramod Thevannoor said.

KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera said the collaboration would provide a strong scientific basis for evaluating the proposed Water Metro expansion while ensuring environmental protection and climate resilience remain central to project planning and implementation.

He said the partnership combines KMRL's expertise in integrated public transport with the research and technical capabilities of SCMS Water Institute, supporting Kerala's efforts to develop innovative and sustainable transport infrastructure.

If the proposed route is found feasible, the Water Metro service would improve connectivity between the existing metro rail network, inland waterways and Cochin International Airport, offering passengers an efficient and environmentally friendly travel option.
