‘A bit over the top’: MVI who fined Kerala Police jeep transferred

Thrissur (Kerala): Motor Vehicle Enforcement Inspector P V Biju, who fined  a Wadakkanchery police jeep, has been transferred to the Ayyanthole RTO. The transfer order includes a directive not to assign him to enforcement duties until further orders.

After the fine became news on social media, the police registered a non-bailable case against Biju, accusing him of obstructing police duty and attempting to bring disrepute to the force in public.

A fine of ₹4,000 was imposed on the police jeep because insurance and pollution check documents were not carried at the time of inspection. Although the police officer claimed the vehicle had insurance, the details were not accurate on the Parivahan portal.

When the insurance documents were produced the next day, the fine was reduced to ₹250. Subsequently, a fine of ₹500 was levied for failing to carry the insurance document and lacking a pollution check certificate.

MVI was a bit over the top, says Transport Minister

Transport Minister C P John said that the action of the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Inspector in fining the police jeep was a bit "over the top". The Minister made this remark during a 'Meet the Press' programme at the Press Club.

When asked what action was taken against the official, the Minister replied that he would not speak about it right now. When the question was repeated, he stated that the matter could be closed for the time being.
