Kottarakkara: While kids across the state cherished the joy of getting back to school the other day, Supriya, a Class 3 student, remained lonely as her brother, who was supposed to accompany her to school, was no more.

Sanjay (Sanjumon, 11), son of Santhosh and Preetha, passed away after suffering from sudden fever and vomiting. The condition of the child, who initially suffered a small fever, worsened on Wednesday. He was soon rushed to a private hospital in Puthoor, but could not be saved.

On reaching the fifth grade, Sanju was admitted to AEPM High School, Irumpanangadu. However, Supriya insisted on going to school with her brother and finally both of them were admitted to the same school.

“Our kids were very excited to go to the school with their new books. Sanju was the one who had packed both of their bags,” recalled their parents.

On Thursday, the sub-district level ‘Pravesanolsavam’, scheduled to be held at Anakottoor, was reduced to a mere ceremony. Other celebrations including the procession were cancelled owing to the sad demise.

Around hundreds of people took part in the funeral which was held at the house yard at 3.30 pm the other day.
