‘Laser pooram’ set to illuminate southern gopuram of Vadakkunnathan Temple

Thrissur: In an effort to tap into the tourism potential of Thrissur, including the famous Thrissur Pooram festival, preparations are underway for a laser show at the south gopuram (entrance gateway) of the Vadakkunnathan Temple. The idea was proposed during a consultative meeting on Pooram, attended by ministers from the district, and subsequently entrusted to the district collector for execution. The collector, in collaboration with the laser show teams, has explored the possibilities to bring this concept to life, with plans to start the show during Onam.
The laser show aims to offer an experience that combines the grandeur of Kudamattam, Ilanjithara Melam, and fireworks. To enhance the visual appeal, the iconic "aanappalla mathil" (elephantine boundary wall) flanking the gopuram will be painted white.
The show is scheduled to run on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 pm to 8 pm, ensuring its conclusion before Trippuka, an important ritual at the temple. The show will also feature informative narrations about the Vadakkunnathan Temple, which has garnered recognition from UNESCO for its heritage conservation efforts. Additionally, the show will highlight key events of the temple, such as Aanayoottu (elephant feeding ceremony) and Shivaratri.
Another objective of the laser show is to attract a significant number of foreign visitors and provide them with an opportunity to witness this event. In line with this vision, plans are underway to create a tourism package that includes attractions like the Puthur zoological park. The estimated cost of the project amounts to approximately one and a half crore rupees, with Steel Industries Kerala Limited collaborating on the project.
The initial phase of the project has been discussed, and further deliberations will determine the department responsible for its implementation. A detailed project report is also expected to be submitted, followed by the initiation of the tender process.
