Guwahati: Popular singer Zubeen Garg, known nationwide for hits like "Ya Ali," tragically passed away in a scuba diving accident in Singapore on September 19 at the age of 52. On Sunday, his mortal remains were brought from Delhi to Guwahati, where thousands of grieving fans gathered to pay their respects.

In a heartfelt video message on Zubeen's official Instagram, his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, appealed for peace as her husband made his final journey. She expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love from fans, saying, "I'm asking everyone to come together—Zubeen is finally coming home. When he was with us, you all showered him with love and blessings, and Zubeen always gave that love back. I hope his final rites are peaceful." She added that police and state authorities were providing full support during this difficult time.

Addressing the FIRs against Zubeen's manager, Siddharth Sarma, Garima emphasised his importance, recalling, "Siddharth, who has been like a brother to him from the start, will be coming along as well... During the lockdown, when everything was closed, Siddharth made sure we had food and supplies, and even brought Zubeen back from Mumbai by bus." She urged fans to set aside negative feelings towards Siddharth, highlighting his crucial role by saying, "Tomorrow, I'll need my people around me, and I need Siddharth's support—without him, I won't be able to handle everything."

Fans in Guwahati lit candles in memory of the beloved artist, mourning his loss. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita paid homage to Zubeen Garg at IGI Airport.

Earlier, CM Sarma announced that the singer’s remains would be kept at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex (Sarusajai Stadium) in Guwahati on September 21 from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM to allow friends, followers, and admirers to pay their last respects. The government called on everyone to cooperate to ensure that Assam’s cherished cultural icon receives a dignified farewell.

In mourning, the Assam government declared a three-day state mourning period during which official entertainment, ceremonial programs, and public celebrations will be suspended as a mark of respect for the late singer.
