Guwahati: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing singer Zubeen Garg's death charged four individuals, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and Amritprava Mahanta, with murder in a chargesheet filed Friday in a Guwahati court.

Shyamkanu Mahanta served as chief organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, where Garg died mysteriously while swimming in the sea on September 19.

Garg's cousin and suspended Assam Police officer Sandipan Garg faced charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the chargesheet submitted to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court, lawyers confirmed.

Sharma acted as the singer's secretary, while Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta were band members.

The singer's two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, were charged under Section 31c of the BNS for criminal breach of trust involving misappropriation of entrusted funds or property.

Assam government-formed SIT, headed by Special DGP M P Gupta, investigated the case after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared in the recent assembly session that Garg's death constituted "plain and simple murder."

Singapore Police Force's parallel probe found no initial foul play, with investigations potentially extending three more months.
