Youngest ever, 5-time MLA: Nitin Nabin to assume BJP presidency today, signalling generational shift

Nitin Nabin, a five-time MLA from Bihar, is poised to formally assume office as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday, marking a significant generational moment for India’s largest political party. At 45, he will be the youngest person to lead the BJP, following a nomination process that underlined overwhelming organisational backing.
Uncontested rise backed by wide support
Nabin emerged as the sole candidate for the top post after 37 sets of nomination papers were filed in his favour on Monday. Each nomination was endorsed by senior party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, outgoing president JP Nadda, Union ministers, chief ministers and members of the BJP’s parliamentary party.
The nomination process, conducted at the party headquarters in Delhi, followed the BJP’s internal electoral schedule notified on January 16. Scrutiny found all nomination papers valid, and with no withdrawals, Nabin stood unopposed. The organisational election was initiated after presidents were elected in 30 of the BJP’s 36 state units, clearing the constitutional requirement to begin the national process.
A clear signal of generational shift
Nabin’s elevation is being seen within the party as a deliberate generational shift, aimed at giving greater space to younger leadership. Senior leaders have highlighted the process as an example of internal democracy, stressing that the BJP’s leadership selection follows a transparent and participatory structure from the booth level to the national level.
He is expected to formally take over on Tuesday in the presence of top leaders, with the Prime Minister also likely to attend. Nabin is set to preside over his first formal meeting with party office-bearers within days of assuming charge.
Track record in government and organisation
A five-term legislator, Nabin has remained unbeaten in electoral politics since entering the Bihar Assembly in 2006. He represented Patna West initially and later the Bankipur seat after delimitation. In government, he served as Bihar’s Minister for Roads between August 2021 and 2022, and later handled portfolios including Urban Development, Housing, and Law and Justice from 2024 to 2025.
Organisationally, his rise has been steady. He has held key roles in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha at both state and national levels and was entrusted with responsibilities in states such as Chhattisgarh and Sikkim. In Chhattisgarh, he played a key role in strengthening organisation and campaign strategy ahead of the BJP’s return to power in 2023.
From working president to party chief
Declared BJP national working president in December after a prolonged selection process, Nabin’s appointment then was widely read as a signal of the high command’s choice. His formal elevation on Tuesday completes that transition, placing a younger leader at the helm as the party looks to the next decade.
Faith visit across key religious sites in Delhi
BJP National Working President Nitin Nabin visited the Hanuman Temple in CP, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and Jhandewalan Temple in Delhi for prayers and darshan.
