A 28-year-old woman from Attibele, near Bengaluru, who had accused her husband of injecting mercury into her body, died this month after battling for life for nearly nine months.

An FIR was registered at Attibele Police Station on November 23 after the victim, Vidya, recorded a detailed statement before slipping into critical condition.

According to her dying declaration, Vidya said she had endured constant harassment, humiliation and neglect from her husband, Basavaraj, and father-in-law, Mariswamachari. She alleged that her husband repeatedly called her “mad,” locked her inside their home, stopped her from meeting relatives and frequently abused her. The couple also has a four-year-old child.

Vidya stated that on the night of February 26 (Shivaratri), she went to sleep and woke up only the next evening with severe pain in her right thigh, resembling the sensation of an injection.

As her health deteriorated, she sought treatment at Attibele Government Hospital on March 7, from where she was referred to Oxford Hospital.

Doctors at Oxford Hospital reportedly detected mercury poisoning, performed surgery and sent samples for analysis, which confirmed the presence of mercury in her body.

After more than a month of treatment, she was shifted to Victoria Hospital, where doctors informed her that the poison had spread to multiple organs, including her kidneys. She was placed on dialysis but remained critical.

In her police statement, Vidya alleged that her husband and father-in-law had injected her with mercury with the intention to kill her.

After struggling for months with organ damage caused by the toxic metal, Vidya succumbed in November. Police investigations are underway based on her dying declaration.
