Why did Trump congratulate Modi after BJP’s Bengal win? Answer is bigger than politics

Washington/Kolkata: Why did US President Donald Trump personally congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the BJP’s victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections? The answer lies far beyond Bengal’s borders.
Soon after the BJP scripted a historic win in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Trump hailed the result as a “clear, decisive, and historic victory.”
While congratulatory messages between world leaders are common, Trump’s reaction drew immediate attention because Bengal’s political battle is now being seen as a symbol of the BJP’s growing national and global political influence.
The BJP’s landslide victory in Bengal is not just another state election result. For years, West Bengal was considered one of the toughest regions for the saffron party to crack.
The Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, had dominated the state for over a decade and defeated the BJP convincingly in 2021. But in 2026, the political equation dramatically flipped.
Out of 293 Assembly seats, the BJP won 207 seats, while the Trinamool was reduced to 80. The scale of the victory shocked political observers and immediately triggered international reactions.
According to White House spokesperson Kush Desai, Trump and Modi had spoken over the phone last month, during which Trump expressed “respect and admiration” for the Indian Prime Minister. Trump reportedly also said India was fortunate to have Modi as its leader.
Political analysts believe Trump’s congratulatory message was not merely about Bengal, but about what the Bengal result represents.
With the BJP now expanding aggressively across eastern India and the NDA governing 22 states and Union Territories, the Bengal verdict is being viewed as another major consolidation of Modi’s political dominance.
The BJP’s rise from governing only a handful of states a decade ago to controlling regions representing over 70 percent of India’s population has become a major international political story.
Bengal’s fall into the BJP camp has further strengthened the perception of Modi as one of the world’s most electorally powerful leaders.
That is precisely why Trump’s reaction stood out. The Bengal verdict was no longer just a regional election result, it became a global political headline.
