Who is Nupur Bora? Assam officer caught with ₹1.7 cr cash, gold and diamonds

Guwahati: A high-stakes corruption probe in Assam has unearthed ₹1.7 crore in unaccounted cash and gold ornaments from the residence of Nupur Bora, a Circle Officer currently posted in the Goroimari Revenue Circle, Kamrup district. The seizure was made during raids conducted by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell on Monday.

The raids conducted at multiple locations across Guwahati, Barpeta, and Golaghat also targeted Lat Mandal Surajit Deka from Barpeta, allegedly associated with Bora. Officials revealed that the raids began in the early hours of Monday, just after both Bora and Deka returned from a short trip to Arunachal Pradesh.

Bora, who joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019, previously served in Barpeta and Karbi Anglong districts. During her tenure in Barpeta, she allegedly played a central role in a multi-crore land scam, involving illegal land transfers and widespread irregularities.

What all recovered: Massive seizure from Guwahati flat

From Bora’s apartment in Gotanagar, Guwahati, officers recovered ₹1.7 crore in cash, now being verified in the presence of SBI officials, along with a large stash of gold and diamond jewellery.

Additional searches led officials to multiple bank lockers held in Bora’s name across Barpeta and Golaghat, which are currently under scrutiny as part of the investigation into disproportionate assets.

Meanwhile, at Deka’s residence in Dangarkuchi, Barpeta, vigilance officers recovered ₹10 lakh in cash, adding to the growing list of assets linked to the duo.

Land scam & corruption allegations

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the raid and made serious allegations, stating that, “Nupur Bora unlawfully transferred lands of Hindu people to illegal infiltrators while she was posted in Barpeta. This officer was on the radar of the vigilance cell for the last six months. Today, her house was raided by vigilance officials, and more than Rs 1 crore 70 lakhs was seized. The government will take strict action against the corrupt officer.”

A senior vigilance official stated, “The raids are still underway. The total extent of disproportionate assets will only be known once the searches are completed and the lockers are examined.”
