Mumbai: The Western Railway (WR) has announced a temporary suspension of platform ticket sales at four of its key stations to prevent overcrowding during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath festivals,

According to an official statement issued on Monday, the restriction will be in place from 15 to 31 October at Bandra Terminus in Mumbai, and Vapi, Udhna, and Surat stations in Gujarat.

The decision comes in light of previous incidents during festive travel periods. In October last year, nine passengers were injured in a stampede at Mumbai’s Bandra station after a large crowd surged to board a train.

WR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Vineet Abhishek, said the move is intended to ensure safe and smooth passenger movement amid the anticipated festive rush. “This temporary measure has been taken to manage crowds more effectively and enhance safety within station premises,” he stated.

Exemptions will be granted in genuine cases, including those accompanying senior citizens, women passengers, persons with disabilities (Divyangjan), illiterate individuals, or others requiring special assistance.

The Western Railway has urged travellers to plan their journeys accordingly and cooperate with railway staff to help maintain orderly and safe conditions across stations.
