A well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified monsoon activity across Bengal, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue rain alerts for multiple districts.

While scattered showers are expected in South Bengal, residents are unlikely to get immediate relief from the ongoing humid and uncomfortable weather conditions.

The weather office said moisture levels have increased significantly due to the active southwest monsoon, leading to sticky and sultry conditions across Kolkata and nearby districts.

In contrast, North Bengal is likely to witness heavy rainfall over the next few days.

Kolkata To Stay Warm And Uncomfortable

Kolkata experienced bright sunshine for most of Saturday, with intermittent cloudy spells offering little respite from the heat.

According to the IMD, temperatures in the city will remain close to seasonal averages, but high humidity will continue to make the weather uncomfortable.

The department also indicated that there is very little chance of substantial rainfall in the city at the moment.

On Saturday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 23.4 degrees Celsius, nearly 2.9 degrees below normal, while the maximum temperature settled at 35.7 degrees Celsius, slightly below the average for this time of year.

Thunderstorm Alert Across South Bengal

\Several districts in South Bengal are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall on Saturday.

Birbhum, Murshidabad, East and West Bardhaman, Jhargram, East Midnapore, and Purulia are among the districts expected to receive stronger weather activity.

The IMD has also warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 50 kmph in isolated areas during thunderstorms.

From Sunday onwards, temperatures are expected to rise again across South Bengal, although isolated spells of rain and thunderstorms may continue in some regions.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast In North Bengal

All districts of North Bengal are expected to receive rain and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy showers likely in Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar.

The weather office said strong winds with speeds between 40 and 50 kmph could accompany the rainfall.

Similar conditions are expected to continue on Sunday, with Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar likely to witness heavy rainfall at isolated places. According to the IMD, heavy rain activity may persist in North Bengal till at least Tuesday.
