West Bengal Assembly election 2026: BJP set for historic majority, nears 200-seat mark

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party appears poised for a historic breakthrough in West Bengal, surging toward a commanding majority and presenting the most formidable challenge to the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year hegemony. Early trends indicate a fundamental transformation of the state’s political landscape as the saffron party nears a decisive mandate.
As of 7:30 p.m. Monday, official figures from the Election Commission show the BJP has secured 94 seats, while the TMC has claimed 40. The broader trajectory suggests the BJP is winning or leading in 195 of the 294 constituencies, surpassing the 147-seat majority threshold, while the TMC tally stands at 90.
The tabulation for 293 Assembly segments is being conducted across 77 centres in 23 districts under a massive security blanket. More than 2.5 lakh personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and state police have been stationed to maintain order, with strongrooms under 24-hour surveillance amid sporadic tensions between rival supporters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the campaign’s central figure alongside strategist Amit Shah, characterised the results as a triumph of "good governance."
"The Lotus blooms in West Bengal! The 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections will be remembered forever," the Prime Minister posted on X. "I bow to each and every person of West Bengal. The people have given a spectacular mandate to BJP, and I assure them that our Party will do everything possible to fulfil the dreams and aspirations of the people of West Bengal."
Banerjee Alleges ‘Game Plan’
As the prospect of a fourth consecutive term slipped away, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a defiant video message contesting the legitimacy of the trends. She accused the Election Commission (EC) of institutional bias and intentional delays.
"A false narrative is being spread," Banerjee alleged, claiming the poll panel was withholding results in areas where the TMC held the lead. "This is a game plan by the EC and the BJP, as it is not declaring results or leads in areas where we are leading."
The Chief Minister specifically cited "severe anomalies" with voting machines in Kalyani and reported that counting had been abruptly halted in several locations after initial rounds. She urged her candidates and agents to remain at the centres to prevent further irregularities.
Shifting Allegiances
The campaign was marked by high volatility and intense discourse over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of rolls, electoral rigging, and deep polarisation. While the TMC maintained its presence in parts of Kolkata and certain rural strongholds, the BJP’s surge was propelled by significant gains in border, tribal, and industrial regions.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who appears poised for a personal victory in his own seat, expressed total confidence in the outcome. "The BJP will form the government," he stated as the party neared a breakthrough that pollsters suggest marks the end of an era for the TMC and a definitive win for "Brand Modi."
