Mathura (Uttar Pradesh): Four students died and another was hospitalised after they entered a water tank to clean it at a residential school in Vrindavan, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday at Vrindavan Gurukulam, after the students noticed a foul smell coming from the tank.

Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said one student first entered the tank to clean it but did not come out.

Four other students then entered the tank. When they also failed to emerge, people present at the spot pulled them out and rushed them to a hospital.

Four students were declared dead at the hospital, while the fifth student was admitted for treatment.

Those who died were identified as Manu Katara (24) from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, Rishab Sharma (18) from Meerut, Aryan Sharma (18) from Kaushambi and Devansh (17) from Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh.

Medical Superintendent Dr Vinit Yadav said the fifth student, Rudra Videsh (18), is stable and recovering.

Probe ordered into incident

District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh has ordered an inquiry into the incident by the city magistrate.

Police are examining CCTV footage from the school premises to establish the sequence of events.

The bodies have been sent for postmortem, while efforts are underway to contact the families of the deceased students.

“Further legal action will be taken after receiving a complaint from the families,” SSP Shlok Kumar said.

Around 100 students staying on campus

Around 200 students are studying Sanskrit at the residential school, with about 100 students currently staying on the campus.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the deaths.

In a post on X, he described the incident as “extremely sad and heartbreaking” and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.
