‘MGR–Jayalalithaa moment’ Vijay takes oath; social media reacts on missing family, Trisha’s presence

Actor-turned-politician Vijay officially stepped into a new chapter on Sunday as he took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in a grand ceremony held in Chennai. While the historic political moment drew massive crowds, celebrations, and celebrity presence, social media soon became occupied with another topic entirely. The absence of Vijay’s wife and children at the ceremony.
Several fans online said the occasion “felt incomplete” without his immediate family beside him during one of the biggest moments of his life.
Popularly known as “Thalapathy”, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief took oath in the presence of party leaders, supporters, close friends, and family members.
Vijay’s parents, Shoba Chandrasekhar and SA Chandrasekhar, were present at the event and were seen cheering him on during the ceremony.
Actress Trisha Krishnan was also spotted attending the swearing-in, which quickly fuelled online discussions because of the long-running rumours linking the two actors.
However, it was the absence of Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, along with their children Jason Sanjay and Divya Saasha, that became one of the most discussed topics online.
Many social media users began sharing reactions and theories, with some drawing comparisons to iconic political pairings from Tamil Nadu’s past.
One user wrote, “A true MGR–Jayalalithaa moment for Tamil Nadu.”
Another commented, “New CM, New Queen? Thalapathy Vijay takes oath as CM, but the real story is in the front row! No wife, no kids, but Trisha is there with his mother? Divorce rumours or unofficial confirmation? Sangeetha's absence speaks louder than words!”
A third user posted, “The family that should have been at the centre of attention today is absent. As Joseph Vijay takes the oath, his estranged wife Sangeetha, son Jason Sanjay, and daughter Divya Sasha are not attending the ceremony.”
Divorce proceedings underway
Earlier this year, Vijay’s wife Sangeetha filed for divorce at the Chengalpatty Family Welfare Court after 27 years of marriage. In the petition filed in February, she reportedly cited infidelity and mental distress as the reasons behind the separation. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for June 15.
According to the petition, the couple initially registered their marriage in the UK in 1998 before later conducting a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in 1999 at Rajah Muthiah Mandram in Chennai.
Sangeetha stated that the early years of their marriage were peaceful and happy. However, she alleged that issues began surfacing in 2021 after she came to know about Vijay’s alleged extramarital relationship with an actress.
