'Arrest Jaya Bachchan': VHP demands over Maha Kumbh remark

New Delhi: The political battle over the Maha Kumbh stampede has intensified, with the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) calling for the arrest of Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan. The controversy erupted after Bachchan alleged that dead bodies from the tragic incident were being dumped into the river, contaminating the sacred waters.

VHP’s media in-charge Sharad Sharma strongly condemned the statement, accusing Bachchan of spreading misinformation and disrespecting Hindu sentiments. “Maha Kumbh is the backbone of devotion, where one attains Dharma, Karma, and Moksha. Jaya Bachchan should be arrested for spreading falsehoods,” Sharma asserted.

Bachchan, on the other hand, had criticised the handling of the event, accusing the Yogi Adityanath government of prioritising VIPs over common devotees. “Where is the water most contaminated right now? In Kumbh. Bodies have been thrown into the river, leading to contamination,” she claimed.

Her remarks have triggered backlash from the BJP, with Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma challenging her to provide proof. “If you make such serious allegations, you must back them up with evidence. False claims will not be tolerated,” he stated.

The stampede, which occurred on January 29 at the Triveni Sangam Ghat, claimed over 30 lives and left more than 90 injured. Critics have pointed to mismanagement and overcrowding, alleging that VIP privileges contributed to the chaos.
