Vijay’s TVK seeks Congress support: KC Venugopal leaves final decision on Tamil Nadu govt to TNCC

New Delhi: In the wake of a transformative electoral outcome in Tamil Nadu, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal confirmed that the president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay, has formally reached out to the Indian National Congress (INC) for assistance in forming a new government.
The request follows a closely contested election where the TVK emerged as the single largest party but fell short of a simple majority in the 234-member Assembly.
"...TVK president Vijay has requested INC for support to form a government in Tamil Nadu," Venugopal stated. "INC is clear that the mandate in Tamil Nadu is for a secular government, committed to protecting the constitution in letter and spirit. The INC is determined not to have the BJP, and proxies run the Government of Tamil Nadu in any manner."
Venugopal emphasised that the Congress leadership’s primary objective is to ensure that the governance of the state remains aligned with constitutional values and free from the influence of the BJP or its affiliates.
To determine the party's official stance, the high command has delegated the authority to its regional branch.
"Accordingly, the Congress leadership has directed the TNCC (Tamil Nadu Congress Committee) to take a final decision on Vijay's request, keeping in view the sentiments of the state reflected in the electoral verdict," Venugopal added.
The decision by the TNCC will be pivotal in deciding whether the TVK can stabilise its numbers to successfully form a cabinet and prove its majority on the floor of the House.
