‘Will build Babri Masjid, launch my own party’: Suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir declares war on both sides

West Bengal politics spiralled into fresh turbulence on Thursday after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) suspended Murshidabad’s Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir for his controversial declaration that he would “build the Babri Masjid” in the district — a remark the party said was deliberately provocative and aimed at communalising the political atmosphere.
Senior TMC leader and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said Kabir had been warned multiple times.
“We have cautioned him thrice earlier. Still he is doing this. That is why we are suspending Humayun Kabir. The party will not have any relation with him,” Hakim said.
He described Kabir’s sudden invocation of the Babri Masjid as “unnecessary, inflammatory and harmful to communal harmony.”
The TMC also alleged that Kabir’s remarks were made with encouragement from the BJP and were designed to trigger tensions ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
However, far from backing down, Kabir escalated the confrontation after his suspension, announcing a dramatic political leap.
“I will announce a new party on December 22 and will field candidates on 135 Assembly seats. I will fight against both the BJP and them (TMC). They can do whatever they want,” he declared, signalling open war on both his former party and the main opposition.
Kabir’s vow to build the Babri Masjid — followed by his promise to launch a party and take on both major political fronts — has injected a combustible religious and political charge into Bengal’s already volatile pre-election landscape. The TMC insists it will not tolerate attempts to destabilise social harmony, while Kabir positions himself as a political renegade ready to reshape the battlefield.
