The annual life certificate — the simple but vital document that confirms a pensioner is alive — is the government’s primary safeguard against fraud and wrongful pension disbursal. Banks and government departments rely entirely on this certificate to continue releasing monthly pension payments.

However, the deadline for submitting this year’s certificate ended on November 30, and those who failed to complete the verification will not receive their December pension, nor any future payments until the certificate is submitted and approved. Restoring payments may also take several days, making timely submission crucial.

How to submit the life certificate

Pensioners can complete the process through multiple methods:

  • In person at bank

The traditional and still widely used method is to visit the bank where the pension is credited. Pensioners fill in the life certificate form, present valid ID documents, and the bank verifies and updates the government records.

  • From home using digital face authentication

Pensioners can now submit their life certificate digitally using Aadhaar-based face authentication. With a smartphone, internet connection and Aadhaar-linked mobile number, they can scan their face and complete the submission within minutes — no physical visit required.

  • Through Jeevan Pramaan app

Ideal for those who cannot travel, the Jeevan Pramaan app allows users to authenticate their identity using Aadhaar and facial recognition. The app has made the entire process quicker and more transparent.

  • Doorstep submission for those who need assistance

Banks and India Post provide doorstep verification services for senior citizens or those with health issues. Staff visit the pensioner’s home, verify documents, fill out the forms and update the system on their behalf — a service that is invaluable for the most vulnerable pensioners.

If your pension stops — what next?

Payments may be paused if the life certificate is not submitted on time, but pensioners need not panic. Once the certificate is uploaded — via bank, app or doorstep service — the pension will resume. Processing can take a few days, so authorities advise avoiding last-minute delays.

Submitting the life certificate on time ensures uninterrupted pension payments and helps prevent fraud, guaranteeing that the benefit reaches the rightful recipient.
