Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the state government’s flagship welfare initiative, the ‘Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’ (Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme), at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. To mark the inauguration, the Chief Minister personally distributed 1-gram, 22-carat gold rings to newborn babies and their mothers.

The state government introduced the initiative as a major welfare measure aimed at encouraging institutional deliveries in public healthcare facilities, promoting maternal and child health, and supporting families during childbirth. Out of the approximately 7.8 lakh births recorded annually across Tamil Nadu, around 53% (4.2 lakh) take place in government hospitals, where this benefit will directly apply.

Who Qualifies for the Scheme?

To receive the 1-gram gold ring, infants must meet specific eligibility criteria established by the Tamil Nadu government:

  • Hospital Location: The child must be born in a Tamil Nadu government hospital.

  • Residency Requirement: The baby’s mother must be a permanent resident of the state of Tamil Nadu.

  • Registration: The mother must be registered under the state's official pregnancy and infant monitoring system.

  • Retrospective Effective Date: The scheme covers babies born on or after June 22, 2026 (coinciding with CM Vijay’s birthday).

For babies born between June 22 and September 27, 2026, distribution is organized through 107 designated hub centers. For all eligible births occurring from September 28 onward, families receive the ring directly at the hospital prior to discharge. Each ring is individually numbered and issued in tamper-proof packaging to ensure authenticity.

Implementation Costs and Government Spending

The scale and budget allocated for the rollout highlight the considerable financial scope of the initiative:

  • Annual Target: Designed to reach approximately 4.41 lakh newborns each year.

  • Annual Budget: The state has allocated ₹755.83 crore annually to sustain the scheme.

  • Initial Supply: A total of 1.28 lakh rings were procured for the first phase through the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation, supplied by Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers in a 70:30 ratio.

Current Value and Projected Worth in 2036

At the time of launch, the market price of 22-carat gold in Chennai stands at approximately ₹14,000 per gram, making the initial tangible value of each gift roughly ₹14,000 (excluding additional jewellery making charges or taxes).

While intended primarily as a social welfare measure rather than a financial asset, the long-term value of the gold ring could appreciate considerably based on historical market trends:

Even under conservative growth estimates of 5.2% annually, the original ₹14,000 gold allocation per newborn could exceed ₹23,000 by 2036, offering long-term financial security alongside immediate maternity support. (Compiled)
