Tesla opens first charging station in Mumbai, plans expansion by September
Mumbai: Electric vehicle giant Tesla has officially opened its first charging station in India, marking a key milestone in its entry into the country's growing EV market.
The charging station includes:
- Four V4 Superchargers (DC fast chargers) with a top speed of 250 kW, priced at Rs 24 per kWh
- Four AC destination chargers, offering up to 11 kW, priced at Rs 14 per kWh
This setup is aimed at supporting premium Tesla customers and boosting EV adoption in Mumbai.
Tesla plans to open three more charging stations in the city by the end of September 2025. These will be located in:
- Navi Mumbai
- Thane
- Lower Parel
The company is steadily building the infrastructure required to support its Indian customer base as it expands its presence in the country.
Tesla’s India journey gains momentum
Tesla made its India debut with the launch of the Model Y SUV on 15 July 2025. The car is being imported as a completely built unit (CBU) from the company’s Shanghai Gigafactory in China.
Two variants of the Model Y are available:
- Long-range rear-wheel drive starting at Rs 67.89 lakh
- Standard rear-wheel drive at Rs 59.89 lakh
Deliveries are expected to begin in the third and fourth quarters of 2025.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk had earlier cited high import duties as a major hurdle for entering the Indian market. However, with the showroom and now a charging station in place, the company is signalling a strong commitment to India.
To strengthen after-sales support, Tesla India Motor and Energy Private Ltd has leased a 24,500 sq ft facility in Kurla West, Mumbai, which will be developed into a service centre.
