Dry weather today, light rain ahead as Northeast monsoon nears withdrawal in Tamil Nadu

# News Desk

Chennai: Most parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to experience largely dry weather today, with the possibility of early morning mist or light fog in a few places, according to the Meteorological Department.

On Monday, light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated locations over the delta districts and Karaikal, while the rest of the state is expected to remain dry. Similar weather conditions may continue on Tuesday, with light to moderate rain forecast at a few places over southern Tamil Nadu, the delta districts, and Karaikal. Northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to see dry weather during this period.

Looking further ahead, the weather department has said that on December 31 and January 1, isolated light to moderate rainfall may occur over southern Tamil Nadu, while northern districts, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to continue under mostly dry conditions.

Meteorologists say the gradual reduction in rainfall activity is due to changing easterly wind patterns, which are now favouring drier conditions across the region.

The changing weather signals the final phase of the Northeast Monsoon, which typically spans from October to December. The monsoon is expected to officially withdraw in the coming days.

Despite nearing its end, the 2025 Northeast Monsoon has been largely beneficial for the state. From October 1 till date, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have received about 42.8 cm of rainfall, close to the normal seasonal average of 43.7 cm.

Officials noted that Cyclone Ditwah significantly boosted rainfall, especially across the delta districts and parts of north Tamil Nadu, while Chennai and surrounding areas also recorded several heavy spells during the season.

As the Northeast Monsoon draws to a close, Tamil Nadu is expected to transition into stable winter weather, with rainfall activity gradually tapering off in the days ahead.
