Swift, precise and seamless delivery: Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN) marks a new era in postal services

The Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN), developed by the Department of Posts at the national level in collaboration with institutions such as IIT Hyderabad, NRSC, and ISRO, marks a significant step forward in modernising postal services. This new digital system will now be used to deliver postal items like parcels and other consignments—except letters—more quickly and accurately to the intended recipients. For letter correspondence, the traditional 6-digit pincode system will continue as usual.
This digital reform introduces a completely new method in the postal world, enhancing India's position in the global digital ecosystem.
The DIGIPIN is a 10-character alphanumeric code consisting of English letters and numbers, much like a password. It replaces the traditional pincode for non-letter deliveries and provides the exact geolocation of the recipient’s home or business. This system is also beneficial for emergency services like ambulances and fire brigades, enabling them to reach precise locations swiftly.
While the pincode system, introduced in 1972, covered broader areas to ensure accurate delivery, DIGIPIN offers highly precise location tracking, particularly helpful in rural, coastal, forest, and remote areas where traditional addresses are often unreliable. Importantly, DIGIPIN ensures privacy, as no personal data is linked to the code. It also functions offline, making it highly adaptable.
How to Use DIGIPIN
Users can obtain their DIGIPIN from the official website:
