'Udaipur Files' release stalled; SC asks centre for decision, directs security consideration

New Delhi: In a critical update on Wednesday, declined to immediately lift the Delhi High Court's stay on the release of 'Udaipur Files', the controversial film based on the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal.

During today's proceedings, a bench of Justices Suryakant and Joymala Bagchi noted that the Central government's committee was scheduled to examine the movie today at 2:30 PM. The Court emphasized that the committee must decide "immediately without any loss of time" on the objections raised against the film's release. The bench also allowed one of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case to be represented before this committee.

In a notable observation, the Supreme Court stated that the filmmakers and Kanhaiya Lal's son are at liberty to approach the police, and if a threat perception is established, they should be provided with necessary security. This directive comes amidst the highly sensitive nature of the film's subject matter and the ongoing legal challenges.

The film's producer, Amit Johnny, had approached the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court's interim stay, which was imposed just a day before the film's scheduled global release on July 11. The High Court's decision was based on concerns over the online publication of an uncertified teaser and potential incitement of communal tensions, especially during the Kanwar Yatra.

Mohammed Javed, an accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, has also filed a plea, arguing that the film's release could prejudice his right to a fair trial. The Supreme Court's decision today effectively means that the film will not be released for now, as the apex court awaits the Centre's comprehensive review and decision.
