Nanded: Shiromani Akali Dal chief and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was injured during a knife attack in Maharashtra's Nanded on Thursday, police confirmed.

An assailant targeted Badal with a knife whilst he was visiting the Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji Mugat, according to police accounts.

One individual has been taken into custody in connection with the assault, which occurred at approximately 1:45 pm, an official stated.

Badal was hurriedly taken to a private hospital for medical care, police said.

Video footage circulating on social media showed Badal walking inside a building with a piece of cloth wrapped around his right hand.

Earlier in the day, Badal had visited the Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded alongside his wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who serves as an Akali Dal Member of Parliament.
