Mumbai: Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane, a serving officer in the Maharashtra Police, has emerged as the central figure in the shocking suicide case of a 28-year-old woman doctor from Satara district. Badane, who was posted at the Phaltan police station, was arrested on Saturday after being accused of repeated sexual assault and abetment of suicide.

According to officials, Badane, in his mid-30s, was a resident of Phaltan and had been serving with the Maharashtra Police for several years. Known locally as a familiar face in the Phaltan police unit, he reportedly came in contact with the deceased doctor, who worked at a government sub-district hospital, several months ago.

Investigators believe that the two had known each other personally, though the nature of their relationship has become the focus of the ongoing probe. The young doctor was found dead in a hotel room in Phaltan late on Thursday night.

Her death note, allegedly written on her palm, named Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane and another man, Prashant Bankar, a Pune-based software engineer and son of the doctor’s landlord.

In the note, the doctor accused Badane of raping her multiple times, threatening her, and mentally harassing her over an extended period.

Following the discovery of the suicide note, the Phaltan Rural Police filed a case under Section 376 (rape) and Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.

Badane was initially untraceable but surrendered at the police station on Saturday evening after co-accused Bankar’s arrest earlier that day. He was taken into custody and immediately suspended from service pending investigation.

Sources in the Satara police said preliminary evidence, including digital messages and call records, is being examined to establish the extent of communication between Badane and the victim.

The probe will also look into whether Badane used his official position to intimidate or silence the victim.

The incident has sparked public outrage, not only because of the nature of the allegations but also because the main accused is a law enforcement officer entrusted with upholding justice. Women’s rights groups and medical associations have demanded a transparent and impartial investigation, calling the case a “blot on the police system.”

As the investigation progresses, Badane now faces serious charges that could end his career and lead to life imprisonment if convicted — a stunning downfall for an officer once seen as part of Maharashtra’s frontline policing force.
