Students forced to do 100 sit-ups as punishment at Maharashtra school; one hospitalised

Palghar: Students at a government-run residential school for tribals in Palghar, Maharashtra, were allegedly forced to perform 100 sit-ups as punishment by a teacher, prompting authorities to launch an investigation, an official confirmed on Monday.

The incident is said to have taken place at the government secondary and higher secondary ashram school in Bathane village, located in Vasai taluka.

Sources report that a teacher instructed both boys and girls to complete 100 sit-ups as a form of punishment, with one student requiring hospitalisation as a result.

The ages and grades of the affected students have not been disclosed.

Satyam Gandhi, a project officer with the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP), stated that an inquiry team had already been sent to look into the allegations. He added that show-cause notices had been issued to both the teacher and the headmaster, and that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against them, depending on the findings of the inquiry.
