Srinagar airport shuts down as snowfall grounds all flights, NH-44 closed

Srinagar: Heavy rain and snowfall disrupted normal life in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, forcing the closure of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) and leading to the cancellation of all flights at Srinagar Airport, officials said.
Traffic movement was halted at multiple points, including Jakhani Chowk in Udhampur, as snow accumulation up to Ramsoo made roads slippery and unsafe. Several parts of Jammu also witnessed rainfall, with chilly conditions prevailing across the region.

Authorities said all types of vehicles were stopped at safer locations along NH-44 as a precautionary measure.
Flights suspended amid snowfall
The air traffic to and fro Kashmir was suspended after flight operations were cancelled at the Srinagar airport due to heavy snowfall in the valley, which has rendered the runway unsafe for aircraft operation, officials said.
"In view of continuous snowfall, accumulation of snow on operational areas, and the prevailing forecast of adverse weather en route, all flight operations at Srinagar airport stand cancelled for the day in the interest of passenger safety," officials at the airport said.
Earlier, IndiGo Airlines announced the temporary suspension of operations in Srinagar.
“Due to snowfall in Srinagar, flight operations, both take-offs and landings, have been temporarily put on hold. This may lead to extended wait times both onboard and on the ground. To ensure we are ready for departure as soon as we receive clearance, our team may complete boarding formalities in advance. We understand that delays can be inconvenient, and we assure you that our team remains fully committed to make your wait as comfortable as possible,” the airline said in a post on X, adding that delays may occur and passengers should check their flight status before heading to the airport.
