Sonam Wangchuk to visit Rajghat after hospital discharge, return to Ladakh

New Delhi: Activist Sonam Wangchuk is set to be discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Monday and will pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat before returning to Ladakh, his team said.

Wangchuk, who ended his 26-day hunger strike late on Friday night, is expected to leave the hospital at around 11.30 am after recovering from the prolonged fast.

Following his discharge, he will visit Rajghat before departing for Ladakh.

The activist had earlier paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on June 28 before beginning an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in support of students protesting alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.

Wangchuk joined the student-led agitation on June 28 and remained on an indefinite fast for 26 days. On July 18, he was shifted to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital, where he claimed he was being held "like a detainee".

He was later transferred to Medanta Hospital after the Delhi High Court directed that he be shifted for treatment.

The 36-day protest, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), concluded on Saturday following the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The agitation, which began on June 20, centred on demands for accountability over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak and examination irregularities.
