Guwahati: Train services in Assam's hill section were disrupted on Thursday after the engine of the Silchar-Guwahati Express derailed on the Badarpur Railway Bridge, affecting rail connectivity between the Barak Valley and the rest of the state.

No casualties have been reported in the incident so far. According to railway officials, the derailment involved the Silchar-Guwahati Express (Train No. 15615), leading to the suspension of train movements along the affected stretch.

Following the incident, the Guwahati-Silchar Express (Train No. 15516) was cancelled, while several other trains operating through the hill section were held at different stations.

The disruption caused inconvenience to passengers travelling between Guwahati and Silchar, as well as those relying on connecting services through the region.

Railway personnel rushed to the site and began restoration operations to clear the affected section and facilitate the resumption of train services.

Sources indicated that the restoration work was expected to be completed by Thursday evening. However, the exact timing of service resumption would depend on the progress of repairs and safety clearance.

The Badarpur railway section serves as a vital transport link for southern Assam, particularly the Barak Valley, connecting the region with other parts of the Northeast.

Any disruption along this corridor can affect passenger movement and railway connectivity across the region.

Meanwhile, the circumstances surrounding the derailment remain unclear, and the cause of the incident is yet to be established.

Railway authorities have not issued a detailed statement regarding the derailment or a confirmed timeline for restoring normal operations.

Passengers planning to travel between Guwahati and Silchar, or through the affected hill section, have been advised to monitor official railway announcements for updates on train cancellations, delays and revised schedules.

Normal train operations are expected to resume once the affected section is cleared and declared safe for railway movement.
