Should Vijay stay in politics or return to films? Social media debates
Chennai: Social media platforms were flooded on Saturday following TVK Chief Vijay’s election campaign, with a mix of reactions ranging from praise for his speech to calls for him to return to cinema.
Noted political analyst Sumanth C Raman observed that Vijay’s style of speaking had improved significantly. In his post, he remarked: “Vijay is learning fast. His speech is decidedly better today. More hard-hitting and less filmy.”
What did supporters request?
One user on ‘X’ urged the actor-turned-politician to acknowledge his party’s grassroots workers during his public addresses. He wrote, “Whenever you (Vijay) address the gathering, please talk about the local cadres of your party also, Anna (brother).”
Another user expressed disappointment at Vijay’s political shift, writing, “Sorry, our Vijay Anna needs to come back to movies. No need to enter politics. Let him act in movies.”
A post by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin drew attention in political circles, with some linking it indirectly to Vijay’s campaign.
Some were struck by the sheer size of the gathering. One user compared it to the rallies once seen for the late AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa.
He commented, “After Jayalalithaa, the only person who received this much confidence of the people of the region is he (Actor Vijay). Really shocked.”
What went viral on social media?
Several videos from the campaign spread widely online. In one clip, a group of women performed Aarathi (a traditional ritual of welcome) for Vijay, who acknowledged the gesture.
In another video, a supporter was seen handing over a bunch of bananas to Vijay as a token of affection, which was collected by his security staff from the vehicle he was travelling in.
