Shimla: A doctor at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla has been accused of physically assaulting a patient on Monday, sparking outrage among patients and staff.

The patient, Arjun Panwar, had visited the hospital for routine medical tests. After experiencing breathing difficulties, Panwar lay down on a bed in another ward. According to him, the doctor behaved rudely without any provocation, which led to an argument and eventually, physical assault.

“I had just undergone a bronchoscopy and was struggling to breathe. When I requested oxygen, the doctor questioned my admission status,” Panwar said.

He asked the doctor to speak to him respectfully, but the doctor became confrontational. When asked if he spoke to his family in such a manner, the doctor claimed he was getting personal and started hitting him.

A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the doctor repeatedly hitting Panwar while he lay on the bed, attempting to shield himself.

Following the incident, a large crowd gathered at the hospital, demanding action against the accused doctor.

The IGMC administration has set up a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the matter.

Dr Rahul Rao, Medical Superintendent of IGMC Shimla, stated that the committee is reviewing the case and will submit its report within a few hours.

He also confirmed that an FIR has been filed against the doctor.
