Cong's Sam Pitroda claims hacking incident, threatened with cryptocurrency payment

New Delhi: Sam Pitroda, Chairperson of the Indian Overseas Congress, revealed on Saturday that his personal devices, including his laptop, smartphone, and server, have been repeatedly hacked. He also shared that hackers have threatened him with a smear campaign unless he pays tens of thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency.
In a statement shared with news agency ANI via email, Pitroda explained, "I want to bring to your attention a critical matter. My laptop, smartphone, and server have been repeatedly hacked and severely compromised over the past few weeks."
The hackers, he said, have warned that if he doesn't make the requested payment, they will launch a damaging campaign to tarnish his reputation.
"The hackers have issued threats, demanding payment of tens of thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency. They have warned that if unpaid, they will launch a smear and misinformation campaign to tarnish my reputation by contacting people in my network," Pitroda added.
Pitroda also urged the public to be cautious if they receive any suspicious messages or emails that seem to come from him.
"If you receive any emails or messages that appear to be about me from any unknown email or mobile number, I urge you not to open them, not to click on my links, and not to download any attachments. Just delete them as they may contain malware that could compromise your own devices," he advised.
Currently travelling, Pitroda mentioned that he plans to take immediate action upon his return to Chicago. He intends to replace outdated hardware, upgrade software, and implement stronger security measures to safeguard his digital presence.
"I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience or concern this situation may cause," he said, reassuring his supporters and network.
