Stale food seized from catering unit in Kochi

Kochi: Stale food was seized from a catering centre which supplies meals to trains including the Vande Bharat Express. Inspection was carried out at a unit in Kadavanthra, Ernakulam which was operating without a corporation license. Food items in a rotten and unhygienic state — including decayed meat and spoiled eggs — were seized.

There had been complaints earlier against the establishment. Local residents had reported that the waste from the centre was being discharged into a nearby stream. At that time, the corporation authorities had imposed a fine. Corporation officials said that two notices were issued asking the establishment to obtain a license. However, license is still to be obtained. The corporation authorities also stated that they do not know who owns the establishment.

The recent inspection was done after complaints were lodged from residents about a strong foul smell. It was during this inspection by the corporation’s health department that the spoiled food was found. Expired meat was also seized. Most of the workers at the centre were migrant labourers from other states.

The authorities plan to shut and seal the establishment. It is reported that the unit has been operating for less than a year. Packets of food meant for distribution on trains including the Vande Bharat were found at the place. Meanwhile, no official statement has yet been received from the railway authorities regarding the incident.
