Kolkata: Representatives of West Bengal’s medical fraternity are set to observe a solemn occasion on Sunday, marking the birthday of the junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who was brutally raped and murdered. The event, organised by the Joint Platform of Doctors, aims to honour her memory and continue the demand for justice.

The organisers have extended an invitation to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to attend the programme. Similar invitations have been sent to the offices of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Kolkata Police, Bidhannagar Police, the West Bengal Health Department, and the West Bengal Medical Council.

“The birthday of the RG Kar victim, who was like our daughter, is on Sunday. So we are inviting people from all walks of society, irrespective of their political beliefs,” said an office bearer of the Joint Platform of Doctors.

The programme will be held within the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital premises from 5 pm on Sunday.

On the same day, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front, which has been actively leading the protest movement for justice, will organise a separate programme at the hospital premises. This event will include an oath-taking ceremony to reaffirm their commitment to seeking justice for the victim.

In addition, a silent protest rally will be held from 2 p.m., starting from College Square in north Kolkata. The victim’s parents will actively participate in all the scheduled events.

No response from Chief Minister or TMC

Despite the invitation, there has been no reaction from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or her party, the Trinamool Congress, regarding their participation in the event. The absence of an official response has drawn attention, especially given the gravity of the case and the ongoing demands for justice.

Victim’s mother appeals for public support

On February 5, the victim’s mother released a heartfelt video message urging the public to join the movement for justice.

“My daughter died on August 9. Her birthday is on February 9, six months after the crime. We are yet to get justice in the matter. We will be on the streets on February 9. The people have been beside us for the last six months. So I appeal to the people again to hit the streets on February 9,” she said in the video.

She also made a special request for people to plant flower saplings in her daughter's memory.

“My daughter was very fond of flowers. So I request each of you to plant a sapling either at your home or at your workplace,” she appealed.
