KDMC hospital assault case: Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre sent to police custody till July 13

A Kalyan court on Friday remanded Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre to police custody till July 13 in connection with the alleged assault on doctors and nurses at KDMC's Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli.
Mhatre, the prime accused in the July 6 incident, was produced before the court after being discharged from Thane Civil Hospital, where he had been admitted following complaints of high blood pressure after his arrest.
The prosecution sought an extension of his custody, arguing that further interrogation was necessary as the investigation progresses. The court granted the plea, allowing police to continue questioning Mhatre until July 13.
The alleged assault at the municipal hospital triggered widespread outrage among the medical fraternity, with doctors launching a strike demanding stronger security measures and strict action against those involved.
Dr Mahendra Baviskar, father of one of the assaulted doctors, Dr Shristi Baviskar, said the protest would continue until justice is delivered.
Police have registered an FIR at Vishnu Nagar Police Station. Three other accused in the case were also arrested and produced before the court after their earlier police remand ended.
Mhatre has denied assaulting any woman doctor or nurse. While expressing regret over the incident, he claimed the CCTV footage may have created a misleading impression due to the camera angle and maintained that he only tapped a doctor's hand while raising concerns about issues at the hospital.
