Kota: A married couple in Rajasthan’s Kota district died by suicide, allegedly due to distress over the husband's financial loss of around Rs 5 lakh in online gambling, police said on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Deepak Rathore. Both were found hanging from ceiling fans in their residence in Kheda Rampur village on Monday morning.

According to police, the couple reportedly bought a nylon rope from a local market on Sunday night and took the extreme step after dinner.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dhaka stated that Deepak's father knocked on their room door on Monday morning but received no response. When the door was forced open, both were found hanging.

No suicide note was recovered from the room, the police added.

Online gambling loss led to depression

Family members said Deepak had recently lost about Rs 5 lakh in online gambling and had been showing signs of depression.

A few days before the incident, Deepak had reportedly spoken to his wife's elder sister over the phone and shared his distress, telling her he saw no way out but to end his life. The sister-in-law, according to the family, had urged him not to take any extreme steps and had promised help.

Bodies handed over after post-mortem

Deputy SP Dhaka confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the alleged suicide.

The bodies were handed over to the family following a post-mortem examination, he added.
