Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi face FIR over alleged unauthorised entry into Akashvani Bhavan

New Delhi: The Delhi Police has registered an FIR over the alleged unauthorised entry of Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other INDIA bloc leaders, into the Akashvani Bhavan premises during their protest against the Election Commission of India on Tuesday.
According to police, the INDIA bloc had planned to march from Parliament House to Nirvachan Sadan, the headquarters of the Election Commission. However, no official permission had been sought or granted for the proposed march, police said.
The protesters were stopped near the Election Commission office, following which several opposition leaders and MPs staged a sit-in. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra later entered the Akashvani Bhavan premises along with other leaders and continued their protest there.
Police said the protesters were asked to leave the premises but allegedly refused to do so. They reportedly insisted that they would remain there until a delegation of MPs was given an opportunity to meet Election Commission officials.
The Delhi Police said it subsequently intervened to "maintain law and order" and prevent the situation from escalating. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other protesters were removed from the premises and detained.
Around 260 people, including 10 MPs, were detained during the protest, according to police. They were taken to New Police Lines in Kingsway Camp and later released.
The protest was organised by opposition parties over allegations related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The FIR relates to the alleged unauthorised entry into the Akashvani Bhavan premises and the subsequent protest. Police have not yet provided details of the sections invoked in the case.
On Tuesday, Delhi Police had detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc leaders from the Akashvani Bhavan premises, saying the action was necessary to "maintain law and order" and prevent the situation from deteriorating.
In a statement, Delhi Police said the action was taken in accordance with the law after Gandhi "refused to vacate" the area, stating that "they would not move until a delegation of MPs was granted time to meet officials of the Election Commission of India."
Further details of the FIR are awaited.
