Patna: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is currently touring Bihar as part of his Voter Adhikar Yatra, was left red-faced on Monday after a woman he highlighted as a “victim of voter list deletion” admitted that her name was, in fact, very much present on the rolls.

The incident took place in Chapla village of Nauhatta block, Rohtas district, where Gandhi stopped to interact with locals and listen to their grievances about alleged voter suppression. During the meeting, a local woman, identified as Ranju Devi, claimed that her name had been removed from the electoral rolls, echoing the Congress leader’s charge of systematic manipulation of voter lists under the current regime.

Television cameras and Gandhi’s social media team were quick to capture the moment, presenting it as proof of his campaign narrative. However, the script took an unexpected turn within hours when Ranju Devi clarified that her name was not missing from the voter list.

Speaking to local reporters, Devi admitted that she had misunderstood the query and confirmed that her voter identity was intact. “My name is there in the list,” she conceded, contradicting her earlier claim made in Gandhi’s presence.

The sudden U-turn has sparked massive embarrassment for the Congress leadership. Critics say the episode exposes Gandhi’s tendency to dramatize routine issues and build political campaigns on shaky ground.

The BJP wasted no time in pouncing on the gaffe. Party spokespersons called the incident “a classic Rahul Gandhi blunder” and mocked the Congress scion for trying to “manufacture grievances to stay relevant.”

“Rahul Gandhi came to Bihar with a ready-made script of victimhood politics. But the truth caught up within hours. This is why people don’t take him seriously,” a BJP leader said in Patna.

Political analysts believe the episode has dented Gandhi’s attempt to project himself as a champion of voter rights. “When a key campaign plank backfires in such a dramatic fashion, it undermines credibility. For a leader already battling perception issues, this is damaging,” said a senior political commentator.

The Voter Adhikar Yatra is part of Congress’s broader strategy to mobilize support ahead of upcoming state elections. But Monday’s embarrassment in Rohtas may prove to be an unwelcome distraction, giving his opponents more ammunition to question his leadership style and ground connect.

For Rahul Gandhi, who often accuses rivals of undermining democracy, the Bihar slip-up has turned into yet another controversy — one that the opposition will likely keep alive in the coming days.

Rahul Gandhi has been running a campaign around what he calls “vote chori” (vote theft) — he alleges that the BJP and the ruling establishment are manipulating the electoral process to stay in power.

Here are the key points of his “vote chori” allegation:

Massive Deletions in Voter Lists –

He claims that names of genuine voters, especially from Dalit, backward, and minority communities, are being systematically removed from electoral rolls in BJP-ruled states to weaken the Opposition’s support base.

Targeted Voter Suppression –

Gandhi alleges that the deletions are not random, but carefully targeted at constituencies where the BJP fears losing.

ECI Favouring BJP –

He repeatedly accuses the Election Commission of India (ECI) of being biased and turning a blind eye to large-scale irregularities in voter registration, deletions, and transfers.

Electronic Manipulation Concerns –

Alongside “vote chori,” he has also hinted at possible misuse of EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines), saying they lack transparency and are vulnerable to tampering — though without direct evidence.

Narrative of Democracy Under Threat –

Gandhi ties the “vote chori” charge to his larger political messaging: that Indian democracy is being “strangled” by the BJP through institutions, money power, and manipulation of voter rights.

Bihar Yatra Focus –

His current Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar is being projected as a movement to “expose vote chori” and demand restoration of democratic rights by ensuring every citizen’s name remains in the rolls.

In short, Rahul Gandhi’s “vote chori” allegation is his way of saying the BJP is stealing elections — not through ballot boxes like in the past, but through selective deletion of names, misuse of government machinery, and manipulation of institutions.
