Prosecution seeks death penalty for ex-Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case

New Delhi: The prosecution on Tuesday sought Death penalty for former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar. He was convicted in a case of killing father-son duo in November 1984 in the Saraswati Vihar area.
The public prosecutor is to file his written submissions. He is pressing for the Death penalty in the guidelines in Nirbhaya and other cases. Senior counsel also files his written submissions.
The court has listed the matter for hearing arguments on sentence on February 21.
The Rouse Avenue court found Kumar guilty in the case on February 12. Kumar is already serving a life sentence in another anti-Sikh riots case linked to the violence in Delhi Cantt.
The case pertains to the killing of one Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh, both residents of Raj Nagar, Delhi, at the hands of an unruly mob comprising of thousands of persons.
The 1984 riots erupted following the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, leading to widespread violence against the Sikh community.
