Mumbai: Amid strong criticism over her casting as Mandodari, the wife of Ravan, in Delhi’s famous Luv-Kush Ramleela, actress Poonam Pandey has released a video message to clear the air.

What did Poonam Pandey say about playing Mandodari?

In a video shared by the UNESCO-recognised Luv-Kush Ramleela committee, Poonam expressed her happiness about the role. She said:

“In Delhi's Red Fort, the world famous Love Kush Ram Leela, I am getting an opportunity to play the role of Mandodari. I am very excited, very happy.”

She described Mandodari as a “very important role”, adding:

“Mandodari is a very important role, a very important character. Mandodari was Ravan's wife. I am looking forward to playing this beautiful character.”

The actress revealed that she would fast during the festival to prepare herself mentally and physically for the role. In her words:

“I have also decided that, since Navratri starts tomorrow, I am planning to fast for 9 days, so that my body and mind remain more cleansed, and I can play this beautiful character well. Jai Shri Ram.”

Why has her casting sparked controversy?

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) raised objections to her portrayal of Mandodari, citing her past controversies. The organisation referred to incidents such as her 2011 stunt, when she promised to strip if India won the ODI World Cup, and the fake death announcement in 2024, arguing that such acts had tarnished her public image.

According to reports, the VHP said casting for Ramayana-based performances should take into account not only acting ability but also cultural sensitivity to avoid hurting the sentiments of devotees.

The Ramleela at Red Fort, which begins on 22 September, will feature several well-known faces. Arya Babbar is set to play Ravan, Kinshuk Vaidya will appear as Ram, Rini Arya will portray Sita, and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari will take on the role of Parashurama.
