New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media on Sunday to praise the newly released film 'Sabarmati Report', which sheds light on the 2002 Godhra train tragedy and its aftermath. Calling it an essential portrayal of truth, Modi remarked that false narratives can only survive temporarily.

In his post on X, PM Modi commended the film for its depiction of one of India's most controversial events.

“Well said. It is good that this truth is coming out, and that too in a way common people can see it,” he wrote.

“A fake narrative can persist only for a limited period of time. Eventually, the facts will always come out!,”  he added.

The Sabarmati Report

The 'Sabarmati Report' explores the tragic events of February 27, 2002, when the Sabarmati Express train was set ablaze, resulting in the deaths of over 50 passengers, many of whom were returning pilgrims from Ayodhya. The incident triggered widespread communal riots in Gujarat, leaving a lasting scar on the nation's history.

While the Gujarat Police attributed the incident to a planned attack by a mob, alternative theories, including an accidental fire, were also proposed. However, subsequent court rulings convicted several individuals charged with orchestrating the attack, reinforcing the police’s version of events.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, an inquiry panel led by former railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, under the Congress-led UPA government, suggested the fire might have been accidental. This theory faced criticism, with many alleging it was politically motivated to tarnish the image of Gujarat’s then Chief Minister, Narendra Modi.

A social media user who praised the movie highlighted how the train-burning tragedy was used as a political tool to target Modi. The user’s post resonated with the prime minister, who reiterated the importance of truth prevailing over misinformation.
