‘Source of national pride’: PM Modi pays tribute to bravehearts on Kargil Vijay Diwas

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured the Indian Armed Forces on Sunday for Kargil Vijay Diwas, conveying the country's appreciation for the "extraordinary courage" and dedication demonstrated by troops in defending the nation.

Writing on social media platform X, the Prime Minister noted that the bravery exhibited by personnel amid severe adversity continues to provide a lasting inspiration for the country.

"On Kargil Vijay Diwas, our nation expresses gratitude to the brave soldiers for their extraordinary courage and commitment towards securing India. Their valour in the face of the most formidable conditions will forever remain a source of national pride," PM Modi posted.

He additionally emphasised that the commitment shown by the veterans of the 1999 conflict will motivate forthcoming generations.

"Their unwavering patriotism and devotion to duty will continue to inspire generations," the Prime Minister stated.

Marked yearly on July 26, Kargil Vijay Diwas holds deep meaning for the populace, commemorating the fortitude, sacrifice, and resolve of military personnel throughout the 1999 Kargil campaign while paying homage to those who sacrificed their lives to safeguard the country's sovereignty.

The conflict commenced in May 1999 after infiltrators covertly crossed the Line of Control to seize Indian positions atop steep mountain ridges with the objective of cutting off National Highway 1A, the critical transport link between Srinagar and Leh.

However, the adversaries failed to gauge the resolve of the nation, prompting India to launch Operation Vijay—a strategy combining careful coordination, firm determination, and the resilient character of its troops. For over two months, military personnel contested every yard across punishing landscapes until all trespassers were expelled and every position was returned to Indian command.
