Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on commission three frontline naval combatants -- INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer -- at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Wednesday. 

The commissioning underscores India's strides toward bolstering its defence manufacturing and maritime security capabilities.

The Stealth Frigate

INS Nilgiri, the lead ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau. It features advanced technologies that enhance survivability, seakeeping, and stealth capabilities, showcasing the next generation of indigenous frigates.

A Cutting-Edge Destroyer

INS Surat, the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, is among the world’s largest and most sophisticated destroyers. With an indigenous content of 75%, INS Surat features state-of-the-art weapon-sensor packages and advanced network-centric warfare capabilities.

Advancing Submarine Construction

INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and final submarine under the P75 Scorpene Project, showcases India’s growing expertise in submarine construction. Developed in collaboration with France’s Naval Group, it highlights the country’s technological advancements and self-reliance in defence production.

Significance of the commissioning

The commissioning of these major naval assets is a pivotal moment in India's journey to becoming a global leader in defence manufacturing. These combatants symbolize advanced technological capabilities and the nation’s commitment to enhancing maritime security.

The addition of these combatants to the Indian Navy’s fleet is a strategic move to strengthen maritime operations and enhance India’s maritime dominance. 

The commissioning will not only mark a leap in defence preparedness but also demonstrate India's progress in achieving self-reliance in the manufacturing of sophisticated naval platforms.
